Berlin on a Hangover: Where to Hide, Eat, and Slowly Rejoin Society

Berlin on a Hangover: Where to Hide, Eat, and Slowly Rejoin Society

Atelier Manganel

There’s no shame in it. Maybe you made it past the Berghain bouncer. Maybe you just drank four Sternis at a canal with someone you met on the U8. Either way, your head is humming, your stomach is threatening rebellion, and the sunlight feels like a personal attack. Willkommen. You’re hungover in Berlin.

Good news: this city is built for your recovery. Berlin knows how to fall apart. And more importantly, it knows how to put itself back together. Slowly, sleepily, one greasy bite at a time.

Here’s how to survive a Berlin hangover, complete with hiding spots, comfort food, and places to feel semi-human again.

1. Start at the Späti (Again)
You woke up in last night’s outfit. Don’t fight it. Shuffle to the nearest Späti like a cryptic in search of Club-Mate and plain pretzels. The fluorescent lighting will hurt. The cashier won’t look at you. It's perfect.

Pro tip: grab an Apfelschorle, a mystery pastry, and something salty enough to erase regret.

2. Hide in a Park, Preferably in a Hoodie
Head to Hasenheide, Volkspark Friedrichshain, or literally any patch of green. Find a bench. Lie down like you're starring in a tragic indie film. Berlin’s park culture has zero expectations. You’re allowed to look awful. You’re allowed to nap. Someone will probably offer you watermelon.

3. Eat Something. Greasy. Carby. Immediate.
Here’s the sacred trifecta:

Döner – Preferably from Imren, Konyali, or that place you swore was “the best” last night but can’t remember now. Döner heals things therapy can’t.

Sarajevo Grill – For next-level Balkan BBQ hangover therapy. Juicy, charred, unapologetic. Triftstraße 8, Wedding. Just what your soul (and stomach) ordered.

Benedict (Prenzlauer Berg) – Open all day. Pancakes, eggs, soft bread, soft lighting. It’s brunch for the broken.

Bonus: Late-night pizza from a window in Neukölln. Is it good? No. Is it perfect? Yes.

4. Sit in a Café That Won’t Judge You
You need caffeine, shade, and emotional silence. Try:

Isla Coffee (Neukölln) – Friendly but not fake. Oat flat white. Air you can breathe again.

Kaffeebar (Kreuzberg) – They’ll serve you a recovery breakfast and let you stay until you feel feelings again.

Annelies (Wrangelkiez) – You’ll pay €15 for eggs but the bread will be warm and your shame will recede.

5. If You Must Move, Float
Walk very slowly along the canal. Stop frequently. Let ducks judge you. Or better, go to Liquidrom. Saltwater pool + ambient music = rebirth. You’ll float. You’ll sweat. You’ll forgive yourself.

6. Avoid These Things at All Costs

  • U-Bahn transfers at Alexanderplatz
  • German bureaucracy of any kind
  • Bright fluorescent lighting in Netto
  • Anyone trying to plan a group dinner

7. Find the Quietest Culture Possible
Museums? No. Gallery with one video installation and a sad bench? Yes. Bonus points for spaces with couches and zero signage. Let abstract art hold you like a blanket you forgot you needed.

Try:

  • Silent Green Kulturquartier
  • C/O Berlin (if your head can handle photography)
  • Hamburger Bahnhof (nap between sculptures)

8. Let the Shame Die Naturally
Berlin doesn’t care that you look like you lost a fight with your own reflection. It’s seen worse. Way worse. Sit on a stoop. Watch the trams pass. You’re already rejoining society. One mineralwasser at a time.

Because Here’s the Thing:
Berlin is made for messes. It knows how to hold them. It doesn’t expect perfection. It just wants you upright and occasionally hydrated. The city forgives you. Go slow. Eat well. Wear sunglasses indoors. You’ll be fine by Tuesday.
